9 Euro Trip Itineraries

The Classic

For first time travelers to Europe, the big three cities to visit are London, Paris, and Rome.  This mix of cities is good for a 2 or 3 week trip but people with more time to travel will also include other popular cities like Amsterdam, Barcelona and Madrid.

This itinerary will take you to the major tourist cities in Europe and is good for first time travelers who want to dip their toe into the Europe waters.

Eastern Europe

Moving from the big metropolitan cities in the west to the history and architecture of eastern European cities will be culture shock for many.

In some countries you'll still be able to see remnants of the former Soviet Union and in others you can learn about WWII and the atrocities of the holocaust.

Countries to visit in eastern Europe include Austria, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.  Recommended travel time for these countries is 10-14 days but you can easily spend 3 weeks or more and still find you want more time to discover.

The Balkans

This area in the southeast corner of Europe includes several countries who made up the former Yugoslavia.  Many have had to deal with lots of conflicts in recent history including the Bosnian war and Kosovo war.

What does this mean?  Well, there is plenty of ripe history to see here and many stories to hear.

While countries like Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bulgaria and Romania have made a larger push into the tourism industry, don't overlook countries like Bosnia, Serbia, New Macedonia and Kosovo.

A typical itinerary for this region would span anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks.

Former USSR

Up until the breakup of the USSR in 1991, these countries did not exist and were merely small cogs in the big Soviet Union machine.

Since then, these countries have found their independence and while many remnants from the former Soviet Union still exist in things like architecture, each country has their own unique qualities.

Countries that make up the former USSR include Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova.  Take 2 or 3 weeks to visit these countries and, remember, a visa is required to travel into Russia and Belarus.

Inside The Kit

Around Germany

The country of Germany is so vast with so many notable cities worth visiting, it deserves an itinerary all to itself.

Most visitors first (and sometimes only) stop is the city of Berlin, however, there are many other cities to visit as well.  The cities of Dusseldorf, Cologne, Frankfort, Munich, and Hamburg each give you a different glimpse into German life.

Try to time your visit so it coincides with the yearly Oktoberfest which happens for two weeks each October.  Depending on which cities you choose to visit, this itinerary can run anywhere from one week to one month.

The British Isles

The British Isles consist of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland.  While clumped together into one region, each country has its own unique history and adventures and a month long itinerary will cover it all.

In England the obvious city to visit is London but take time to also visit Manchester, Liverpool, York and Newcastle.  On your way up north to Scotland, stop by Wales to see the city of Cardiff.  The two major cities in Scotland are Edinburgh and Glasgow but keep heading north to the highlands and the Isle of Skye.

After hopping a ferry (or plane) over to Ireland, you'll see a country split as Northern Ireland is its' own country.  Spend time in Belfast in the north to learn why the country is split in two.  To take in Irish culture, the city of Dublin is a must but if you want to see all the natural beauty that Ireland has to offer, head west to the coastal city of Galway.

Nordic Adventure

Get your gloves, scarf and beanie - it's time to head north.  Thanks to low cost airlines, an itinerary that includes hopping from the various Nordic countries of Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland is now an affordable option.

Having said that, the cost of goods including food, attractions, and accommodation are much higher in the Nordic countries.  Don't let that be a reason for you to miss out on all the beautiful landscapes and amazing adventures to experience here.

You can easily do this itinerary is less than 2 weeks but you should really extend your time here a little longer to be able to experience everything.

Portugal and Spain

The countries of Portugal and Spain have more of a relaxed vibe so this itinerary is great for people who want to slow down a little from all the hustle of bustle of cities like London and Paris.

In Portugal you can eat fresh seafood and sip port while in Spain there are tapas and sangria to be enjoyed.  Common cities to visit are Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona but don't miss out on Porto in Portugal and Seville and Valencia in Spain.

Give yourself a good two to three weeks to visit these two countries and, if you're feeling adventurous, there's an option to head south to Morocco for a week to explore the cities and maybe do a camel trek.

The Greek Isles

Starting in late May until early October, the Greek Isles are open for business and calling you.  After spending time on the mainland in the ancient city of Athens, go island hopping to the isles of Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, and Crete.

The amount of time you want to spend here rests solely on how much you want to just relax and enjoy Greek life but a minimum of 10-14 days is a good way to start.
